Chapter Nine
Meadow said, âWell. Iâm just not sure what to think about any of this.â
âI know,â said Beatrice. âAt least Fletcher seemed to be in better shape emotionally when he left.â
âI mean I donât know what to think about the fact that he wants to move from Dappled Hills. Can you imagine? I think he should just put the house for sale and then find another spot to live. Dappled Hills is the best!â She frowned. âDo you think heâs the kind of guy who might fit into our quilting guild? Ash is practically an honorary member now and Iâd really like to grow our male membership.â
Beatriceâs head started hurting. âMeadow, I really donât think this is the best time to engage in guild recruitment. Fletcher obviously has a lot on his mind right now and maybe it would be best for him to get a fresh start somewhere else, like he was saying.â
âBad man,â offered Miss Sissy. She had cookie crumbs dotting the top of her long, floral dress.
Meadow said, âIs this about the argument you said he had with Edie again? Because you know every couple fights, donât you?â
Miss Sissy glowered at her. She might well have not known this since sheâd never found quite the right man to settle down with.
Meadow persisted, âItâs true. Why, Ramsay and I argued this morning over whose turn it was to walk Boris. And it was most definitely his turn. I know Ramsay keeps talking about retirement, but I wonder what Iâm going to do with him at home all day long. I mean, I love Ramsay. I do! But I simply donât want to spend all day with him.â She frowned and looked at her watch. âGoodness. I believe itâs time for me to walk Boris now. The vet has him on a special diet and exercise regimen. Iâm doing so much walking, though that Iâm starting to feel like Iâm the one on the diet.â
âHas Boris gained that much weight?â asked Beatrice. Sheâd seen their huge beast of a dog just a few days earlier but had been mainly focused on the animalâs dirty paws at the time since Boris appeared to be aiming them at her clean khakis.
Meadow sighed. âIâm afraid so. I do believe it may have something to do with Willâs affection for Cheerios cereal. Iâm starting to wonder if Will isnât dropping those Cheerios from his highchair on purpose. He does tend to squeal and laugh hysterically when he does it.â Meadow looked thoughtful.
âSupper?â asked Miss Sissy with a hopeful lilt to her voice. Meadow was now cooking and bringing supper several times a week to both Piper and Ash and Miss Sissy after theyâd discovered Miss Sissy ate nothing but greens of various sorts when she wasnât getting meals. Although Beatrice was beginning to think that diet of greens might be responsible for Miss Sissyâs longevity and lack of pressing health issues.
âAbsolutely! Itâs fish bake tonight. And you two remember the guild meeting tomorrow, please.
